Stone Culture Centre Gulldalsområdet, Malmön

Stone Culture Centre Malmön

The Gulldal area consists of a forge, a mechanical workshop, a locomotive shed, a carpentry workshop and a compressor building with a cooling water pond and switchgear. This centre was the heart of the stone industry on Malmön. The forge dates from the late 1930s and is the best preserved and documented building. It was built with four double boilers and is said to be the oldest and only preserved building of this type and design in Sweden. It is owned by the municipality of Sotenäs and managed by Malmö's local community association.

A living stone cultural centre

Malmöns hembygdsförening wants to preserve and develop this into a living stone culture centre for the benefit of the tourism industry on Malmön and in Sotenäs municipality. In addition to this unique landscape itself, there is also a cohesive cluster of buildings from the stonemasonry era in the centre of the island, which is also unique and invaluable as an overall environment for understanding this era.

By developing and complementing these business buildings into a living and active Stone Culture Centre with partly new content, it is possible to both preserve and renew the culturally and historically valuable buildings. In addition, this development would form the basis for an economically viable business in the form of tourism and rental of premises.

Part of the vision is that the existing Smedjan and associated buildings should be able to accommodate various activities that are appropriate in their context, such as small businesses, artists, blacksmiths and others who rent space. Our guided stone walks start from the forge and cover larger quarries and visits to Draget where the stone industry began. A tour of the "Wolf Park" is included in the cultural trail.

As a complement and magnet, there are café activities, exhibitions, seminars, training courses, courses, municipal information, meeting rooms, etc.

Malmö's local history museum and a boathouse complement the island's history of the stone industry, ships and fishing.
